With me awaiting the inevitable final exams, and Autumn studying for the inevitable final exams, I had a couple of days to occupy myself free from pedagogical responsibilities — a rarity. Since I just had the Nighthawk serviced, including a new rear tire and battery, I decided to call Thomas for a bit of North Georgia Mountain riding. So on Sunday, I got on the old Nighthawk and headed up to Atlanta to meet Smitty for a bit of high-altitude, high-speed, bend-twisting mountain riding. Well, he would do more of that on his crotch rocket; I would “tool” behind as best I could. We had planned on leaving on Sunday, but were delayed for a day. No matter: it allowed us to check out Buckhead and drink some beer. Monday morning, however, we were off, straight out to Dahlonega, then out sexy, curvy Georgia-60 to Suches. 60′s a beautiful road, taking you up several hundred feet, high enough to see the flat of Georgia stretching out to the south. Here’s Thomas gassing up his Superhawk in Suches.
Notice the beautiful blue paint job? He is especially proud of that, maybe even more so than his damned loud pipes.
We had a great time, but I had something on my mind (other than missing my love).
Since our visit to BMW Motorcycles of Atlanta a couple of weeks ago, I have been thinking about that R 1150 R we rode. It was such a cool bike, and exactly what I have wanted since I first started dreaming about owning a motorcycle. It had a sport windshield and hard bags already, so I wouldn’t have to add a thing. It was silver, my favorite German vehicle color, and it is my favorite BMW bike. Unlike the RT, this bike was small enough to ride as a commuter, since I ride to work whenever the weather permits. This is not the best time to buy a new bike, but I couldn’t get it out of my head since that day in late April.
Well, on the ride, I kept thinking about how much cooler it would be if I were on the R 1150 R. Now, I normally am involved in the ride: taking in the corners, the landscape, and the wind on my face, but I was preoccupied this time. I knew I had to check it out, so Thomas and I went over to see Bob this afternoon. And I rode away with a new R 1150 R. Isn’t she gorgeous?
Yes, I called Autumn before I bought the BMW, and she was gracious enough to allow me to be a boy. Thanks, sweetie. I hope you’ll like to be on it as much as I do. Now, I can’t wait to take her to Florida.
Yes — I had a few mixed feelings at first, me being the money gripper/sometimes weary one (it’s not like we have a honeymoon to plan, or anything -hehe), but the bike is just so lovely, and the places we visit will be even better when taken in from a BMW-enhanced perspective. I really appreciate being considered before the purchase. I must say, I’ll miss the comfort and sentiment of the Nightie, but this is the coolest upgrade imaginable. Baby — I am ready to ride.
Incredible and about time! You have gone from novice to experienced rider in no time at all and deserve a bike to suit your use.
Of course this means that you now have absolutely no excuse for not taking the beautiful ride to St. Louis this summer for a visit! Besides visiting us, you can probably coach your fellow bimmer head, Anthony Dean to take you out of the river road for a ride. I will serve as support vehicle and reserve us a spot at Fast Eddie’s in Alton!
Neil would be proud of you. Now all you need is some of the Macallan for those cold nights that lie ahead after a long day on the bike. It is very nice, and silver is definitely your color. Enjoy!
