Well, I know what I’m doing this weekend, thanks to Apple.
I tried to install the upgrade to 10.4.7 last night, and it hosed my system. Right in the middle of the update, the System Update program stopped and informed me that the update encountered an error and has been aborted. It threw the update into the trash and suggested the I retrieve it and try again. I did this, and it produces the error in the photo. In fact, I get this error no matter what package I attempt to install.
Now, very few applications and system functions work correctly. Here’s a list of what’s messed (that I’ve noticed):
- Safari no longer works at all. Neither does Gmail notifier or Preview.
- The dock preferences will not accept input, nor can I drag anything to the dock.
- Norton Antivirus gives me an error when I login, but seems to work OK after that.
The bottom line: be careful when you install this update. Apple update has always been reliable in the past, so this is a surprise. Has anyone else had this issue? Solutions, other than the obvious?
Guess I’ll be backing up my entire computer and reinstalling the system this weekend. Man, I might as well be using Windoze.

Hey you two newlyweds–
Are you going to call us back about the Alabama Shakespeare Festival or are you going to blog your life away?
I am sorry to hear about your computer troubles. Is it all retrievable and fixable?
A, yes it’s fixable by a new install, I guess. I haven’t been able to find any other solutions online. D’oh!
Greg, check your voicemail. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you!
