What would Popeye do? This epidemic of spinach fear is astounding, and stretching across the country, and for all I know, the planet. Everyday the news has something new to add, another infection or another tidbit of information. The latest I’ve heard? The organic spinach was the problem, due to human manure fertilization. Let’s not even get started in musing about where that poo comes from…ick. (Do you get paid for that sort of thing? Ok, I’ll stop.) But, even today at Panera a sign is posted front and center on the register that all their spinach-containing salads and sandwiches have been replaced with field greens. And, you cannot possibly find any bagged spinach on the grocery store shelves. An epidemic. And, I like spinach. I am not an E. Coli fan by any means, and they can take chicken out of my life anyday, but I want my spinach back. Sooner or later ? For now, I can only imagine.

Love your unique heading! WWPD. Brilliant! What would popeye do. Mine was “E Coli, she coli, he coli, no Me coli”!

Check out Nina Planck piece in the New York Times for more on a possible source of contamination. I miss my spinach salads. It’s still a little too hot to grow it here in Alabama, but I’m thinking of planting a container with spinach seeds.

Having grown vegetables commercially including spinach for many years, I can state with some experience that there are a mulitude of ways that bacteria can enter fresh leafy greens both in the field and in the processing plant. But the real point many are missing, is the fact that food has to be transported long distances in the U.S to meet market demands. That process, a vital link in the cool chain, is fraught with difficulties. A few hours above temp anywhere along the line, and the product is at risk. Eat locally – it is cheaper and safer.
